Penobscot

penobscot-handle.jpg

This is a cerimonial War club, carved by the Penobscot tribe (which still exist ) in  the state of Maine, on an island. A well known man, MR. Ben Thomson of St. Louis, Mo.  says it was never used except for Cerimonies. Some say they were made and sold to the white people as Souvenirs . Mr. Thomson says , no way. Either way all agree its over 100 yrs old. It belong to Henry Gerlas parents and was passed  down to him. He is now in his late 70's , and resides on his farm near New Haven, Mo. ITS made of Birch root and has a peice of gravel wedged in it. It had 4 claws on back of head, but one was broken, many years ago. IT measures about 26 1/2 " long. I've attached 3 Pic's so you can get an idea what it really looks like. The carving on it is FANTASTIC ! iT'S SAID TO BE WORTH ABOUT 1000.$ AT AN AUCTION, but i've not got near that much in it and an asking much less. A fine peice for any collection. 275.00 firm
